about

It started with a request: “Send me something.” A simple request, yet one that speaks volumes about trust and respect. You don’t just ask anyone for some input you intend to work with, or elaborate on. You ask it from people whose work you are truly familiar with, have internalized, recognized as coming from a source that is related to your own inspiration. When asked to record a new album for Dauw in 2017, Hüwels wanted to make a collaborative record, so he contacted ten people. Ten fellow musicians that had had a significant influence on him as a musician. And as a person, undoubtedly, since we are all shaped by the people and things that matter most to us.

The ‘something’ could be anything, really. The point for Hüwels was to start from external input. Not to keep his internal world to himself, but, on the contrary, as a challenge to combine these various contributions, adapt his methods and turn it into a whole, a story that made sense. His preferred tools: a guitar and a laptop. His relation to the ten contributors varied: some had been there in Hüwels’ early stages as a musician, had introduced him to new sounds, or had urged him to go public with his music. Others were a less direct influence or had become kindred spirits more recently (and it’s funny how quickly things get an international twist). Some of them had appeared on Hüwels’ own Slaapwel Records.

You would be hard pressed to recognize the sources of the base material, and maybe it doesn’t matter. What is more interesting is what happens when people interact and worlds collide. The music mostly flows in gentle waves, but each track has its own character, moving from soothing calmth to melancholy depth, shapeshifting/pulsating motifs, iridescent masses of sound, or ghostly, tribal percussion. It is an album with a strong homogeneity, yet rich in detail. And most of all, it is about opening a world of possibilities when you bring people together. ‘Tomodachi’ means ‘friend(s)’. From this release - not just a tip of the hat, but a seductive act of creativity and a mesmerizing musical self-portrait - it becomes clear, once again, that friends only need half a word.
